This upcoming plan year will give your clients even more reasons to switch to a Medicare Advantage plan. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will expand covered products and services.
Beginning in 2019, Medicare Advantage plans will have more “primarily health related” coverage. Covered benefits will include in-home supports and other assistive devices. That means that depending on the plan, beneficiaries could be covered for services such:
- Transportation to and from medical appointments
- Home modifications, including grab bars, ramps, and railings
- Nonskilled in-home aides to assist with activities of daily living
- Home-delivered meals
- Air conditioners for seniors with asthma
A prescription will not be required for the services. To be covered, a service must be “medically appropriate” and recommended by the beneficiary’s licensed healthcare professional. According to CMS, the covered services must “compensate for physical impairments, diminish the impact of injuries or health conditions, and/or reduce avoidable emergency room utilization.”
Full details will not be available until the annual enrollment period (AEP) opens. The Medicare Advantage coverage expansion is part of the department’s plan to include services that improve health and promote independence.
